What Causes Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal cancer, also known as bowel cancer, rectal cancer or colon cancer, is caused by a mutation in DNA and cells of your colon and rectum.
When ordinarily healthy cells within the colon mutate and grow uncontrollably, they lead to the formation of polyps. A polyp usually begins as a small growth. This may increase in size to be a pre-cancerous and then a cancerous growth. The process may occur slowly and result in the development of colorectal cancer over many years.
As the number one killer in Singapore, colorectal cancer’s survival rates decrease with each development stage. As a result, early detection plays a crucial role in treating and managing signs of cancer early, allowing patients to receive treatment before the cancer advances.
