Stomach Diseases In A Nutshell
Stomach pain or stomach ache is a common experience amongst people, both young and old. Over-eating, bloating, or gas build-up could often lead one to experience these pains, but they usually go away independently.
While the type of discomfort experienced may range from cramps to aches, or even a sharp pain, stomach pain is typically nothing serious. But how should an individual know if they are suffering from a more severe condition?
Several factors, such as viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections that originate in the stomach, may be a cause of the pain.

Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, usually happens when the cells of the stomach lining begin to mutate. When ordinarily healthy cells within the upper digestive tract system become cancerous, they can multiply and grow uncontrollably, leading to tumour formation. This process may take place slowly and result in the development of stomach cancer over many years.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder caused when stomach juices or food and fluids frequently flow back up from the stomach into the oesophagus. This phenomenon is also known as acid regurgitation or gastroesophageal reflux.
A patient is diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) if they experience acid reflux symptoms more than three times a week.

Stomach ulcers, which may be known as peptic ulcers, are painful open sores in the stomach’s lining. Stomach ulcers develop on the inner lining of your stomach.
They occur when the thick layer of mucus that protects your stomach from digestive enzymes is reduced. This enables the digestive acids to erode the tissues lining your stomach, leading to the development of ulcers on the surface.

A perforated ulcer occurs when an ulcer on the inner lining of the stomach becomes very deep and ruptures outwards. This is a serious condition as the stomach’s bacteria can now escape and infect the lining of your abdomen, in a condition known as peritonitis.
This infection can rapidly spread to the blood, known as sepsis, and thereafter spread to the other organs. If left untreated, this may lead to multiple organ failure or even cause death.

Stomach polyps are lumps that form on the inner lining of your stomach. They are usually formed due to increased acidity of the stomach lining and often do not cause signs or symptoms. They are most often discovered when your doctor is examining you via gastroscopy for other symptoms.
While many cases of stomach polyps are not cancerous, some types of polyps do increase the risk of developing into stomach cancer.

Helicobacter pylori (or H.pylori) is a type of bacteria found in the stomach. These bacteria can enter the body through food, water, utensils, and contact with saliva or body fluids from infected people.
H.pylori infection can cause inflammation and sores (ulcers) in the stomach lining leading to dull pain in the belly. In severe cases, H. pylori infections may lead to stomach cancer.
