As a father of two lovely daughters, Dr Ganesh Ramalingam, general surgeon and head of G&L Surgical Clinic, advocates strong values at home and work.
Speaking to A Magazine on the 2nd Anniversary’s featured article, “The Letter ‘A’ Represents..”, Dr Ganesh Ramalingam shares the significance of the letter ‘A’s in his life and how they have shaped his views and direction.
“Our ethos for our clinic processes and our practice of medicine happens to be based on 3 A’s: ability, affability and availability. But authenticity is a good summary of how we try to lead our lives, how we practice our trade in surgery and service, and how my wife, Lisa, and I bring up our children.”
Authenticity often involves putting oneself forward and being willing to show the world the real side of “You”, and the doctor does not shy away from doing so.
A firm believer in giving back to society, Dr Ganesh decided to take a step forward to contribute beyond the confinements of the medical world and participate actively in humanitarian and environmental activities.
Taking on the mantle as the Youth Service Director of the Rotary Club of Singapore in 2020-2021, Dr Ganesh worked closely with youths and students to champion initiatives across ASEAN to promote personal hygiene and mental health both locally and overseas. The initiatives helped children in less developed countries cultivate the awareness of handwashing and mental health to cope with the rising pandemic of CoVid-19 while also providing financial aid and support to their families.
As members of the Monaco Foundation, the general surgeon and his wife found time to contribute to the foundation by giving back and donating towards projects centred around sustainability, conservation and eco-friendly practices, all of which are pressing issues towards limiting climate change and safeguarding biodiversity in Singapore.
An avid soccer fan for as long as he can recall, Dr Ganesh would occasionally sneak in practice sessions with his friends despite his busy schedule. His passion spurred him to put his skills as a doctor to use, joining the Football Association of Singapore Medical Committee for Singapore’s National Football Team, assisting players with their physique before and during matches as the match doctor for the team.
“We try to achieve all this with a genuine heart, using well-proven and original methods both at home and in the clinic based on accurate and reliable facts. All these intuitive initiatives are to eventually lead and teach a purposeful and meaningful life.”
In a world where most people communicate through devices and live in a world influenced by the internet, we often lose the human touch of authenticity in our lives, where people get to be genuine and true, not just to the people around them but also to themselves.
“Authenticity” can change how we see the world and how we want the world to see us.
By taking this ethos with him, Dr Ganesh Ramalingam hopes to share the importance of staying genuine to oneself and, one day, be able to share the same values with his daughters and team at the clinic.
